Technical FAQ - High Voltage Air Circuit Breakers & MCCBs

A Drawer-type (Withdrawable) ACB features a chassis base that allows the main breaker body to be rolled out of the switchgear cubicle. This permits rapid maintenance, isolation testing, and quick replacement without de-energizing the main busbar. A Fixed-type ACB is bolted directly to the switchgear frame and connected directly to the copper busbars. While more economical, maintenance requires isolating the entire section of the switchboard.
At altitudes exceeding 2000 meters above sea level, atmospheric pressure and air density decrease. This causes two main effects:
1. Reduced Cooling: Less dense air reduces convective heat dissipation, causing internal conductor temperatures to rise faster under load.
2. Reduced Dielectric Strength: Lower air density decreases the ionization threshold of air, lowering the breakdown voltage and reducing the effectiveness of the arc chute.
Therefore, we apply a de-rating factor to the rated current (In) and insulation voltage (Ui) to prevent thermal overload and arc flashover.
Standard commercial AC circuit breakers are typically designed for 400V/690V systems. In contrast, modern solar farms operate at elevated DC voltages or high AC levels (800VAC, 1000VAC, or 1140VAC) to optimize inverter outputs. Photovoltaic MCCBs use specialized arc-extinguishing chambers, stronger magnetic blow-outs, and robust thermoset casing materials to interrupt high-voltage faults, protecting against non-zero-crossing DC arcs and high-power AC faults.
An intelligent controller with an LCD screen allows operators to configure trip settings (L-S-I-G) directly at the unit. Remote communication interfaces (such as RS485 Modbus) enable SCADA systems to monitor real-time current, phase imbalance, and fault history. This enables predictive maintenance, quick diagnostics, and remote open/close commands, which are essential for smart grids and unmanned substations.
