While both protect electrical systems from overloads and short circuits, they serve different layers of the grid. Air Circuit Breakers (ACBs) are used at the main incoming power points, managing high current loads (up to 6300A) and featuring high short-time withstand currents (Icw). This allows down-stream breakers to trip first without tripping the main breaker unnecessarily.
In contrast, Molded Case Circuit Breakers (MCCBs) protect downstream circuits (up to 1600A) and are typically installed in sub-distribution boards to isolate smaller motors, heaters, or feeder branches.
At altitudes above 2,000 meters (6,500 feet), the thinning air reduces cooling efficiency and lowers the dielectric strength of the air gap. Consequently, circuit breakers require derating coefficients.
